The Mysterious Case of Benazir Bhutto’s Assassination

It was a tragic event in the history of Pakistan when Benazir Bhutto was killed on 27th December 2007 in the garrison city of Rawalpindi. Eight years have passed but Ms. Bhutto’s assassination is still an enigma.

Many reports have been filed, arrests have been made, and even a certain group claimed responsibility of attack, the question still remains, who was really behind this henious crime?

Even though Pakistani investigation agencies claimed that a fifteen-year-old boy was the suicide bomber who carried out the attack, however, the question is why did the secret agencies fail to apprehend him? How could he get so close to her motorcade?

After assassination, Asif Ali Zardari, her husband, was selected as the co-chairman of Pakistan People’s Party and then went on to become the president of Pakistan. However, even being at the helm of power corridors, he couldn’t put murderers of Benazir Bhutto to justice. All leads towards the perpetrators came to square one at every corner.

Pakistani politicians declare one another to be responsible for her murder. But US journalist Mark Siegel changed the scenario when termed former President General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf to be responsible for the assassination of Benazir Bhutto because she had allegedly informed him about the threats to her life and who would be responsible if anything happened to her.

However, Pervez Musharraf vehemently denies these charges saying he had nothing to gain from her murder. “We have to see who gained the most due to her death”, contends Mr. Musharraf.

This begs the question that a country with such poor security and law and order conditions, where there is no life security of even such high profile people, who is and who would be answerable for the miseries of common people. It is the question to the political and military elite of this country. It is the question from every common person of this country.
