The unavailability of toilets to a large section of people in India has been a hot topic in the country but all over the world. The problem has been widely reported and many documentaries have been made on the plight of people who have no choice but to defecate in the open due to non-availability of public toilets.
Akshar Kumar’s much awaited movie ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’ targets the same issue. The movie plot is based on a person whose wife leaves him on the first day of their marriage after discovering he didn’t have a toilet.
The movie is set to be released on 11th August, although it has already been leaked [out in the open] online.
According to a study titled, ‘It’s No Joke – State of the World’s Toilets’ by WaterAid, about 60 percent of people in India do not have access to toilets and defecate in the open.
The study further said if the 775 million people without access to toilet were made to stand in line, the line could reach beyond moon.
‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’ is an attempt to rally the support of the political leadership in India to help solve this problem on a priority basis. Many believe instead of spending so much on buying military equipment, a portion should be spent on the welfare of the people.
Pakistan is also not far behind in this area and is included in the top 10 countries where people do not have easy access to toilets.
