David Headley, the American held in connection with Mumbai attacks, has reportedly told a special Indian court via video link that he worked for Pakistan’s spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The agency provides support to militants blamed for the atrocity, he allegedly told the prosecutors.
Headley was sentenced to 35 years in a US prison by a Chicago court for his role in the 2008 Mumbai attacks. He had helped survey targets for the deadly attacks which had cost 166 lives.
“I did ask him how he could say that… and he said ‘ISI provides financial and moral as well as military support to Lashkar-e-Taiba’,” the prosecutor added.
However, Headley could not clarify how he could know about ISI’s involvement and his alleged claim that Lashkar-e-Taiba and ISI had a close nexus.
According to legal experts Mr. Headley’s statement has many loopholes. It could be an attempt on his part to be seen cooperative with the law enforcement agencies so that his sentence could be reduced.
