Former People’s Party member, Jamshed Dasti has been sentenced to three-year imprisonment by the local court in the Fake Degree case. He was also fined for Rs: 5000. Mr. Jamshed Dasti came on a donkey cart to file his nomination papers for the upcoming general elections. However, with this decision of the court, Mr. Dasti can now no longer enjoy driving his donkey cart for atleast three years.

It should be noted here that Jamshed Dasti had been disqualified by Supreme Court from his national assembly seat when it was established that he possessed a fake bachelor’s degree. SC had ordered Election Commission to take action against him in this regard. However, ECP had ignored SC’s clear orders and he was allowed to contest the by polls for the same constituency. It was not required to have bachelor’s degree in the by polls as this rule had been abolished by then. This way, despite committing such a blatant fraud and lying under oath, he got victorious in the by polls and won the same seat again.

This shows the worst form of democratic norms that have been ingrained in the people of this country. Those who commit such heinous crimes are re-elected by them. The people of Pakistan tend to fall prey to the deceiving rhetoric of these so called politicians. They seem to be oblivious of the fact that those who could lie under oath and commit a fraud of such magnitude, could never work for the betterment of the people.
